The Multi-faceted Boom Truck: Choosing A Used Boom Truck

The used boom truck, what is it? In fact, everybody's seen one - the big vans moving about with long metal arms folded back over the roofs. In most cases, a bucket-like apparatus sits at the extension of the extendible arms. These vans exemplify a type of utility vehicle known as a boom truck. A used boom truck, in its most basic definition is a large truck with a long arm (boom) folded back over the roof that has traded hands. In today's economic climate it is becoming more and more viable to purchase well maintained used boom trucks as opposed to a new boom truck.

The boom truck (for example the Saturn boom truck) differs in several areas from the knuckle boom truck. A knuckle boom crane, which is attached to the knuckle boom truck, is an articulated crane that can be folded several times and stored safely and conveniently on the truck bed. Truck and trailer mounted booms like the knuckle boom truck for hire and for sale include (among a great many others) Bronto, Nifty, GSR, Ascendant and Aichi, which can allow for a reach of up to 32 metres and working heights up to 62 metres as well as self drive access platforms with working heights up to 22 metres. The knuckle boom crane can be mounted to the flat bed knuckle boom truck with an operator's cab mounted between loader and chassis cab.

Boom trucks have construction booms attached to the rear for lifting heavy items. The cranes, which may be short and compact (knuckle boom), or may extend the length of the truck bed (trolley boom). Crane boom trucks have a lifting capacity of 10 tons (9.07 metric tons), to approximately 50 tons (45.36 metric tons) for some of the larger vehicles. There are many other truck mounted cranes available in the market place, ranging from cranes for small to large trucks. Used boom bucket trucks for sale through reputable vendors – which are used for lifting and lowering workers to places too tall for ladders - are an example of boom trucks. These trucks are sold in a number of sizes and shapes, each to help make work easier. While the bucket truck is used for many different purposes, the most common is power linemen.

Another example of the boom truck is the concrete boom truck. The concrete boom truck has a specialised boom attached, which is filled with concrete (or similar substance). The boom is designed with a nozzle at the far end to pump concrete and other materials into specified areas. These areas are, in most cases, inaccessible to the vehicle, or are at a considerable height. The boom on a larger concrete boom truck may be extended some 230 feet (71 m). Material is then pumped from the vehicle through the extended boom and directly into the space where it is needed.

A similar concept is used with fire department trucks with specialised booms which pump water into the upper levels of a building. The boom can be used to pump water, or to rescue people trapped in the fire. New and used Boom trucks are often a replacement for many of the older hook-and-ladder trucks.
